Thunder Versus. Warmth Final Score: Lebron, Kevin Durant Star In 98-93 Miami Win

If Wednesday night's showdown between your Oklahoma Thunder and Miami Warmth was, indeed, a preview from the National basketball association finals, everybody is most likely set for an amazing seven-game treat when June comes around. Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook were fantastic for OKC, but Lebron stole the show. He obtained three containers consecutively at some point late within the 4th quarter, enhancing the Warmth to some 98-93 win.

James brought all scorers with 34 points whilst getting seven rebounds cheap nike and doling out 10 of his team's 16 assists. Durant obtained 30 points on 11-of-21 shooting while Westbrook added 28 of their own, however they got little the aid of their fellow starters. Serge Ibaka, Kendrick Perkins and Thabo Sefolosha combined just for 10 points on 13 shots. James Harden was solid from the bench with 12 points on 5-of-11 shooting, but did not lead enough to offset the possible lack of offense in the relaxation from the team.

The time of play between seven and 2 minutes residing in the 4th quarter was truly spectacular, with Durant and James buying and selling blows. With 2:33 left, Durant designed a jumper to create his team within some point. Chris Bosh would hit the following basket with 1:01 left to increase Miami's result in three, but he almost gave free points to OKC. With 43 seconds remaining, Bosh committed a pointless foul on Perkins, preventing the time and delivering him towards the line. Fortunately for that Warmth, each of Perkins' free throws were ugly misses.

The Warmth unsuccessful to attain on their own next possession, thanks simply with a poor shot selection by James. The Thunder strangely let James get publish position on Westbrook, one-on-one, but James much more strangely elected for any fadeaway jump shot. nba for cheap Oklahoma got the ball back and hang up Durant for any 3-point shot, but he skipped lengthy. Westbrook made an appearance to seize the rebound, but fumbled the ball from bounds. Dwyane Wade, who were built with a relatively quiet offensive outing, continued hitting two free throws to ice the overall game.

The Warmth happen to be playing poorly on the highway lately, getting lost six of the last 10 away games, but they are still searching efficient at AmericanAirlines Arena. They still haven't lost in your own home since Jan. 22. With this particular win, they are now just two games behind the Chicago Bulls for to begin with within the East. It was the 2nd straight loss for that Thunder, who lead the Dallas Spurs for that top place in the western world by one game.

Opposing team Versus. Rockets Final Score: Late Lead Vanishes In Houston In 107-104 Loss

Poor shooting and poor shot selection brought towards the La Opposing team coming a 12-point lead with more than six minutes left on Tuesday evening, falling 107-104 towards the Houston Rockets in the Toyota Center. The Opposing team score 40 points within the first quarter and brought by 15 points after 12 minutes of play, but obtained just 64 points within the final 75 %.

Kobe Bryant brought the Opposing team with 29 points, but made just 10 of his 27 area goals. He did score seven points on four possessions within the final two minutes, striking three of 4 highly contested shots. Over his last nine games, Bryant is shooting 36.7% in the area, having a true shooting area of 49.7%.

Courtney Lee and Luis Scola each obtained 23 points to guide the Rockets. Goran Dragic had 16 points and 13 assists for Houston, striking the tie-breaking three-pointer with 28 seconds left.

Pau Gasol had 21 points and four rebounds for that Opposing team, who shot 50.6% in the area. Andrew Bynum added 16 points and 7 boards, while Ramon Periods obtained 14 points from the bench for La.

Bynum was thrown within the third quarter after obtaining two technical fouls, which certainly did not assist the Opposing team.

The Opposing team had an opportunity to tie with the last possession, lower three points with four seconds left, but Periods and Matt Barnes were not able to obtain the ball in the court to take a chance. The Opposing team move onto face the Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday evening.

In apparent move, Opposing team to get option on Andrew Bynum

Over his last 10 games, Andrew Bynum has averaged 24 points while shooting 65.7 percent plus getting 13.1 rebounds per game. He’s been a animal in the finish of games, in which the Opposing team are finally feeding him (read: Kobe Bryant is finally having faith in him) and that he is delivering. Plus, Bynum is remaining healthy.

He's fulfilling his promise this year, with this originates recognition like standing on the All-Star team.

Plus it means money - the Opposing team are obtaining their cheap Jerseys free shipping option on him, reviews the La Occasions.

The Opposing team have until June 30 to exercise the $16.1-million option they've for that this past year of Bynum’s contract. After next season, however, he turns into a free agent unless of course they negotiate extra time between occasionally.

Whenever you question why the Opposing team are earning cost cutting moves within the next couple of seasons, recall the Bynum extension and also the progressively punitive luxury tax that accompany the brand new CBA.

1. When Trip Ends, What Will Lakers Look Like?

The stage and lighting equipment is already starting to fill the back hallways of Staples Center, the sign the Grammys are about to take over the building and the Lakers are leaving for their longest road trip of the season: six games over 11 days.

By the time they play their next home game on Feb. 14 they will be 42 percent of the way through the season, Kobe Bryant will probably move past Shaquille O'Neal into fifth place on the list of NBA all-time scorers … and there could be some new faces on the roster.

"If we do well on this, then we'll be the team we need to be," Andrew Bynum said. "If we don't, then they might start looking around."

Lakers coach Mike Brown confirmed reports that the team has been in touch with Gilbert Arenas, whose sole duties of late have been cashing the checks Orlando keeps sending his way after using the amnesty provision on the remainder of his contract. Arenas believes the Lakers want to see what type of shape he is in before making a commitment, according to a source.

A disastrous slide over the next couple of weeks could prompt more dramatic moves, such as the breakup of the Bynum-Pau Gasol front line that had set the Lakers apart from the rest of the league in past seasons. The situation around Dwight Howard in Orlando is rapidly deteriorating. Deron Williams is sending signals that he'd rather be in a warmer climate than the New York metropolitan area. There might be cheaper or younger tradable pieces than Bynum and Gasol around the league, but you won't find better ones. But they haven't added up to an elite team in L.A. this season.

By the time the Lakers return home it will be just more than a month until the March 15 trade deadline. This could be the last chance for the current roster to prove it has the answers within. The 2011-12 edition of the Lakers still doesn't have a signature victory after 22 games. There hasn't been a galvanizing moment that inspires the fan base and strikes fear in the rest of the league.

Beating the Charlotte Bobcats 106-73 Tuesday night doesn't fit the bill. Teams beat the Bobcats by 30 more often than hybrid-car drivers fill up the tank. This was Charlotte's fourth loss by 30-plus points this season. Victories against the Bobcats shouldn't even count toward playoff seedings, the way beating lower-division schools doesn't help college football teams qualify for bowl games.

"They're an undermanned squad, so you can't take it too seriously," Bynum said.

The Lakers' winning back-to-back games at Denver and Utah to start the road trip would count as something significant. Bryant moving past Shaq and beating the Atlantic Division-leading Sixers in his native Philadelphia would be a memorable night. Boston looms on Feb. 9; a victory against the Celtics warms hearts throughout Lakerland. The Lakers hit New York, and Bryant has a knack for lighting up Madison Square Garden. The Toronto Raptors finish the trip.

If it's any boost of confidence for the Lakers, they're coming off their first back-to-back 100-point games of the season, only the second and third times they passed the century mark.

"I don't know if anything has 'arrived' for us yet, but we are getting better," Brown said.

For the first time the new coaching staff has moved beyond installing its principles and started working on preparing for specific opponents.

Meanwhile, Bynum is getting more experience against double-teams, as evidenced by the nice baseline spin and reverse layup against the Bobcats that he celebrated by keeping his hand extended high in the air as he ran back downcourt. He had 20 points and 11 rebounds, the type of numbers he was putting up in his first games back from the season-opening suspension.

The Lakers are getting some good backup-guard minutes from Andrew Goudelock, whose penchant for looking for his shot brought him a new nickname.

"We call him Mini Mamba," Bryant said.

Goudelock had 12 points, one of six Lakers in double-digit scoring. Bryant started off on pace to record his first 50-point game in three years, scoring 24 points in 16 first-half minutes. But he missed all five of his shots in the third quarter, then sat out the fourth because the reserve players had things in control.

The other starters spent most of the fourth on the bench, as well. Maybe they should have turned to the photographers on the baseline and posed for a picture together … just in case.

Frontline starter at top of Rangers' wish list

C.J. Wilson faced Mark Buehrle on April 27, 2010, at Rangers Ballpark. In the only matchup ever between the two veteran left-handers, Wilson and the Rangers came away with a 4-2 victory.

Now, Wilson and Buehrle face off again -- this time in a different venue. They are considered the two best pitchers on the market, and their final destination could be determined at the Winter Meetings this week in Dallas.

The Rangers have expressed interest in both. So have other teams -- most notably the Marlins, Nationals, Yankees, Red Sox and Angels. There could be others. As many as 20 teams are looking for starting pitching in a thin free-agent market, and at least a dozen -- including the Rangers -- have spoken with Buehrle's agent Jeff Berry.

Beyond Wilson and Buehrle, there are right-handers Edwin Jackson, Hiroki Kuroda and Roy Oswalt, who has a history of back trouble, and then the quality begins to taper off. There may be more business done for starting pitching in trades, rather than going the free-agent route.

Earlier this offseason, the Indians acquired Derek Lowe from the Braves and the Royals traded with the Giants for Jonathan Sanchez. Other starers who could be dealt this offseason include John Danks of the White Sox, the Athletics' Gio Gonzalez and Jair Jurrjens of the Braves.

Rangers general manager Jon Daniels said the club will look to upgrade its starting pitching at the Winter Meetings, but is only looking for somebody at the front of the rotation.

"We're not looking for somebody in the middle who is not better than what we already have," Daniels said.

From a free-agent standpoint, Wilson and Buehrle are probably the only two who fit that profile. Oswalt certainly did at one time, having won 20 games in both 2004 and '05 with the Astros. But he has been on the disabled list four times in the past four years with pain in his left hip and lower back.

During a five-year stretch from 2004-08, Oswalt tied with Johan Santana for the most wins (86), was third with 1,120 innings pitched and sixth with a 3.22 ERA among all qualifying Major League starters. But over the past three seasons, he was tied for 57th with 30 wins and ranked 47th with 532 innings pitched. He is represented by Bob Garber, who also represents Wilson. The Rangers are planning to meet with Garber during the Meetings.

Buehrle, who will turn 33 in March, has been one of the most durable pitchers in the game. He has had a remarkable run of 11 straight seasons with at least 200 innings pitched. During that time, he made more starts and pitched more innings than any starter in the Major Leagues -- while ranking fourth with 157 wins behind CC Sabathia, Roy Halladay and Oswalt. He was 13-9 with a 3.59 ERA in 31 starts and 205 innings for the White Sox last year, and has had just one losing season in the last 11 years.

Buehrle is not overpowering. Over the past 11 years, he has struck out 5.04 batters per nine innings, which ranks 64th among 68 pitchers with at least 1,000 innings. He has allowed 9.48 hits per nine innings, ranking 52nd. His strength is throwing strikes. He ranks fourth with 2.02 walks per nine innings among those 68 pitchers.

Wilson has only been a starter for two years, after making a successful transition from the bullpen. He is 18 months younger than Buehrle, having turned 31 on Nov. 18, but has had two elbow operations in his career. Wilson had bone chips removed from his elbow in 2008 and missed all of '04 after Tommy John surgery. He has had no arm issues during the past three seasons.

Over the past two years, Wilson is 31-15 (.674 winning percentage) with a 3.14 ERA, while making 67 starts and pitching 427 innings. Buehrle is 26-22 (.542 winning percentage) with a 3.94 ERA in 64 starts and 415 innings during that same period.

Wilson has averaged 7.92 strikeouts and 11.35 baserunners per nine innings over the last two seasons, while Buehrle averaged 4.50 strikeouts and 12.21 baserunners per nine innings. Wilson played on a team that won two division titles, but their run support average per nine innings is very close. The Rangers scored 4.78 runs per nine innings for Wilson, while the White Sox scored 4.66 for Buehrle. Wilson has a slightly better ground-ball average (60 to 57 percent) than Buehrle over the past two years.

Buehrle is a superior fielder. He has won three Gold Gloves in the past three years, and has 17 pickoffs over the past two seasons -- tied with Clayton Kershaw for the most in the Major Leagues.

Both pitchers will command high dollars. The Rangers are only interested if the contract "makes sense," according to Daniels. They could go to Spring Training right now and be satisfied with a rotation of Derek Holland, Colby Lewis, Matt Harrison, Alexi Ogando and Neftali Feliz, with Scott Feldman in reserve. But the Rangers are rarely satisfied.

"That's not our mentality," Daniels said. "We're always looking for ways to get better."

So are other teams. Wilson vs. Buehrle should be the top pitching matchup at the Winter Meetings.

Syracuse fires assistant basketball coach Bernie Fine

Bernie Fine was fired Sunday by Syracuse University after a third man accused the assistant basketball coach of molesting him nine years ago.

"At the direction of Chancellor Cantor, Bernie Fine's employment with Syracuse University has been terminated, effective immediately," Kevin Quinn, the school's senior vice-president for public affairs, said in a statement.

The 65-year-old Fine was in his 36th season at his alma mater. He had the longest active streak of consecutive seasons at one school among assistant coaches in Division I.

Zach Tomaselli, 23, of Lewiston, Maine, said Sunday that he told police that Fine molested him in 2002 in a Pittsburgh hotel room. He said Fine touched him "multiple" times in that one incident.

He was the third accuser to come forward in the investigation of child molestation allegations against Fine.

Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim said he supported the university's decision to fire his longtime assistant and expressed regret for his initial statements that might have been "insensitive to victims of abuse.

"The allegations that have come forth today are disturbing and deeply troubling," Boeheim said in a statement released by the school. "I am personally very shocked because I have never witnessed any of the activities that have been alleged. I believe the university took the appropriate step tonight. What is most important is that this matter be fully investigated and that anyone with information be supported to come forward so that the truth can be found. I deeply regret any statements I made that might have inhibited that from occurring or been insensitive to victims of abuse."

Two former Syracuse ball boys were the first to accuse Fine, who has called the allegations "patently false."

Tomaselli, who faces sexual assault charges in Maine involving a 14-year-old boy, said during a telephone interview with The Associated Press that he signed an affidavit accusing Fine following a meeting with Syracuse police last week in Albany.

Tomaselli's father, meanwhile, maintains his son is lying.

Bobby Davis, now 39, told ESPN that Fine molested him beginning in 1984 and that the sexual contact continued until he was around 27. A ball boy for six years, Davis told ESPN that the abuse occurred at Fine's home, at Syracuse basketball facilities and on team road trips, including the 1987 Final Four.

Davis' stepbrother, Mike Lang, 45, who also was a ball boy, told ESPN that Fine began molesting him while he was in fifth or sixth grade.

When the accusations first became public Nov. 17, Boeheim adamantly defended his lifelong friend.

In an interview that day with the Post-Standard, Boeheim attacked Davis' reasons for going public with his accusations.

"The Penn State thing came out, and the kid behind this is trying to get money. He's tried before. And now he's trying again. If he gets this, he's going to sue the university and Bernie. What do you think is going to happen at Penn State? You know how much money is going to be involved in civil suits? I'd say about $50 million. That's what this is about. Money."

No one answered the door at the Fine home Sunday. Before Fine's firing, his lawyers released a statement saying Fine would not comment beyond his initial statement.

"Any comment from him would only invite and perpetuate ancient and suspect claims," lawyers Donald Martin and Karl Sleight said. "Mr. Fine remains hopeful of a credible and expeditious review of the relevant issues by law enforcement authorities."

Tomaselli said the scandal at Penn State involving former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky prompted him to come forward. Sandusky is accused in a grand jury indictment of sexually abusing eight boys over a 15-year period.

"It was the Sandusky stuff that came out that really made me think about it," Tomaselli said in the phone interview. "A lot of people were slamming ESPN and Bobby for saying anything. I wanted to come out. ... It made me sick to see all that support for Fine at that point. I was positive he was guilty."

Tomaselli told the Post-Standard that he didn't ask Syracuse police or federal authorities for help in getting the criminal charges dismissed against him in Maine.

Tomaselli was arrested in April on 11 warrants charging gross sexual assault, tampering with a victim, two counts of unlawful sexual contact, five counts of visual sexual aggression against a child and unlawful sexual touching and unlawful sexual contact, Lewiston police said Sunday. They did not say what led to the charges. He has pleaded not guilty.

Tomaselli told the Post-Standard he met Fine after he and his father, Fred, attended a Syracuse autograph session on campus in late 2001.

The newspaper reported that Fine later called Tomaselli's parents to arrange for Tomaselli to go to Pittsburgh with the athletic department staff on a chartered bus, spend the night in Fine's hotel room and attend the team's game on Jan. 22, 2002.

Tomaselli told the Post-Standard that he had dinner with the team, then returned to the hotel room where he accused Fine of putting porn on the TV and fondling him in bed.

Tomaselli attended the basketball game the next day, sitting several rows behind the bench, and rode the chartered bus back to Syracuse, the newspaper reported.

"The one time there was multiple incidents in that one night, but there was only one night that he ever sexually abused me," Tomaselli told the AP.

However, during a phone interview with the AP, Fred Tomaselli said: "I'm 100 per cent sure that Bernie Fine was never in contact with Zach. He never went to Pittsburgh to a game, never been to that arena."

"I brought him to a couple of games in Syracuse. We always sat in the nosebleed section and left after the game. He never stayed for any overnighters and never even got within shouting distance of Bernie."

During his long career with Syracuse, Fine tutoured the likes of Derrick Coleman, LeRon Ellis and John Wallace in his role of working with post players. Coleman was the top pick in the 1990 NBA draft, Ellis was the Clippers' 22nd overall choice in 1991, and Wallace was picked 18th in 1996 by the New York Knicks.

Boeheim and Fine met at Syracuse University in 1963, when Fine was student manager of the basketball team. Fine graduated in 1967 with a degree in personal and industrial relations and went into business for himself.

In 1970, Fine was named basketball and football coach at Lincoln Junior High in Syracuse and went to Henninger High School the next year as the junior varsity basketball coach. He became varsity basketball coach in 1975. When Boeheim was chosen to succeed Roy Danforth at Syracuse in 1976 Boeheim offered Fine a job as an assistant.

Fine was an integral part of the staff that guided Syracuse to the national championship in 2003. During his tenure the Orange also made two other appearances in the NCAA title game, losing in 1987 to Indiana and in 1996 to Kentucky. He also guided the U.S. Maccabiah team to a silver medal at the 1993 World Maccabiah Games in Israel and has served as director of a successful basketball camp in the Northeast.

The Post-Standard also reported that Zach Tomaselli was invited by Fine to a party at his home after the Syracuse-Pitt game on Feb. 1, 2003 -- a game where Zach Tomaselli said Fine arranged seats for him and his father several rows behind the bench.

Tomaselli told the newspaper his father, who was unable to attend the party, allowed him to go to Fine's house and stay the night.

While there, Tomaselli told the AP, Fine asked him to get into bed and that Fine's wife, Laurie, was there when it happened.

"I told them (police) that Laurie was standing right there when Bernie asked me to sleep in a bed. Laurie knew all about it," he said during the phone interview.

On Sunday, ESPN played an audio tape, obtained and recorded by Davis, of an October 2002 telephone conversation between him and Laurie Fine.

Davis told ESPN he made the recording, which also has been given to Syracuse police, without her knowledge because he knew he needed proof for the police to believe his accusations. ESPN said it hired a voice recognition expert to verify the voice on the tape and the network said it was determined to be that of Laurie Fine.

Davis also acknowledged in an interview with ESPN that he and Laurie Fine had a sexual relationship when he was 18, and that he eventually told Bernie Fine about it.

"I thought he was going to kill me, but I had to tell him," Davis said. "It didn't faze him one bit."

During the call to the woman, Davis repeatedly asks her what she knew about the alleged molestation.

"Do you think I'm the only one that he's ever done that to?" Davis asked.

"No ... I think there might have been others but it was geared to ... there was something about you," the woman on the tape said.

On the tape, she also says she knew "everything that went on."

"Bernie has issues, maybe that he's not aware of, but he has issues. ... And you trusted somebody you shouldn't have trusted ... "

During the call, Davis tells her he asked her husband in the late 1990s for $5,000 to help pay off his student loans.

"When he gave you the money, what does he want for that?" she asked.

He tells her that Fine wanted to engage in sexual activity in several ways.

"... And I'd try to go away, and he'd put his arm on top of my chest. He goes, 'If you want this money, you'll stay right here,"' Davis said.

"Right. Right," she said. "He just has a nasty attitude, because he didn't get his money, nor did he get what he wanted."

On Friday, federal authorities carried out a search at his Fine's suburban Syracuse home but declined to comment on what they were looking for.

New York State Police spokesman Jack Keller said troopers were called to assist the U.S. attorney's office at the search. At least six police vehicles were parked on the street during the search, which lasted around nine hours. Officers carted away three file cabinets and a computer for further examination.

Roundup: Panthers extend Canadiens' skid

Jacob Markstrom made 40 saves and Scottie Upshall scored 5:02 into the third period to help the Florida Panthers extend Montreal's losing streak to six with a 2-1 win over the Canadiens on Monday night.

Markstrom made his second career start and recorded his second straight win, including an 18-save relief outing in a 4-2 win over the New York Islanders on Saturday.
Tomas Fleischmann scored a power-play goal in the first for Florida, which won its second in a row to improve to 5-3.
Montreal fell to 1-5-2, continuing its worst start in 70 years. It is the deepest the Canadiens have gone into a season with only one win since 1941-42, when they got off to a 1-10-1 start that included a pair of losses to the Brooklyn Americans.

Erik Cole scored on a power play 3:08 in for his first Montreal goal. Backup Peter Budaj stopped 29 shots in his Canadiens debut.

College Football Thursday Night Preview: California Golden Bears at Oregon Ducks

California resumes its 2011 season after a bye week and takes on the Oregon Ducks in a prime-time Thursday night battle inside Autzen Stadium. The Golden Bears are coming off a 31-23 road loss to the Washington Huskies as one-point road underdogs despite winning the statistical battle by 48 yards. Many around the program are drawing confidence from last year’s 15-13 setback against the Ducks, as the defense allowed just 15 points and 317 yards to one of the more powerful offensive units in the league. The Golden Bears hold a 39-32-2 lead in the all-time series, but have dropped the last two. Cal is 4-9 ATS on the road and the ‘under’ holds a slight 7-6 advantage in those contests.
The Golden Bears know it must win the battle up front defensively, as the Ducks lead the Pac-12 Conference in gaining 299.5 rushing yards, while their defense ranks second in the conference in limiting opponents to just 78.2. California has played 30 nationally ranked teams during the Jeff Tedford era, posting a 13-17 mark in those contests. Offensively, the team is led by a talented wide receiver duo, as both Keenan Allen and Marvin Jones rank in the top six in receptions and receiving yards in the conference.

Oregon enters this game on a three-game win streak after dropping a 40-27 season-opening contest to the LSU Tigers as three-point neutral-site favorites. The Ducks actually out-gained the nation’s No. 1 team at this time by 62 yards. Running back LaMichael James is starting to get going again, as he gained just 54 yards in the opener, but is now leading all players nationally with 153.3 yards per contest. “I’m just really happy with the way the line blocked, without those guys I wouldn’t be anything,” stated James this week. Oregon is 2-0 ATS as a favorite of 21.5 to 31 points the last two-plus seasons.
The Ducks have won eight of nine against the Bears inside Thursday night’s venue since 1989, while eight of the last 11 series meetings have been decided by 10 points or less. Oregon is really on a roll as a program, winning its last 13 conference games, while averaging 49.5 points per game during its current 18-game home winning streak. Quarterback Darron Thomas has been a nice compliment to James, throwing for a touchdown pass in 17 consecutive games. The offense line has done a tremendous job in leading the nation in fewest sacks allowed.
Bettors will likely back the Golden Bears due to their 20-6-1 ATS mark as an underdog of 10.5 or more points, while the Ducks are 1-5 ATS on Thursdays.

LSU edges Mississippi State

Jarrett Lee completed 21 of 27 passes for 213 yards and a touchdown and No. 3 LSU defeated No. 25 Mississippi State 19-6 on Thursday night.

Lee was the unexpected star, firing conservative, but nearly perfect passes all over the field. His 19-yard touchdown pass to Rueben Randle with 11:56 left in the fourth quarter gave LSU a 16-6 lead.

His only mistake was an interception minutes later, but as it had all game, LSU's defence stuffed Mississippi State with little trouble. LSU (3-0, 1-0 Southeastern Conference) had 14 tackles for a loss and held the Bulldogs (1-2, 0-2) to 193 total yards and two field goals.

Despite Mississippi State's cowbells providing an ever-present backdrop, LSU won its 12th straight game in the series dating to 1999.

Lee's success is quickly making LSU fans forget about expected starter Jordan Jefferson, who has been suspended all season after being arrested for his alleged role in a bar fight in August. Lee wasn't spectacular, but he didn't have to be, calmly managing the game and hitting open receivers downfield.

LSU's Spencer Ware rushed for 107 yards on 22 carries.

LSU was its own worst enemy much of the game before its late-game breakout. In a particularly brutal stretch in the third quarter, the Tigers committed five penalties in less than nine minutes, losing 67 yards in the process. Lee's interception gave Mississippi State new-found life after falling behind 16-6.

But LSU's defence was good enough to make up for all those transgressions, constantly putting pressure on Mississippi State quarterback Chris Relf and disrupting the Bulldogs' vaunted running game, which had gained at least 300 yards rushing in each of the season's first two games.

MSU's Vick Ballard managed just 38 yards on 10 carries, while Relf rushed for 10 yards on 16 carries.

The loss continues Mississippi State's frustration against SEC Western Division rivals. The Bulldogs are 2-10 against the West, with both of those wins coming against rival Ole Miss. It's been a tough six days for Mississippi State, which lost to Auburn 41-34 on Saturday.

As expected, the game was bruising from the outset. Relf was thrown to the turf on a sack by LSU's Kendrick Adams on the second play of the game, and the tone never changed for either team.

Though both teams are known for their run-first approach, the quarterbacks had a surprising amount of success, especially in the first half. Lee completed 13 of 15 passes for 128 yards in the first half and Relf countered with 9 of 11 completions for 78 yards.

But that success bogged down once either offence entered the red zone, with both teams having to settle for field goals that did little to alter momentum.

LSU scored first after a 16-play, 77-yard drive ended in Drew Alleman's 21-yard field goal. Mississippi State answered with their own bruising 14-play, 57-yard drive, capped by Derek DePasquale's 26-yard field goal.

LSU took a 6-3 lead into halftime after Alleman drilled a 42-yard field goal with 1:18 left in the second quarter.

The field goal parade continued in the second half, with DePasquale's 42-yarder tying the game at 6 in the third quarter. Alleman answered with a 41-yard field goal to give the Tigers a 9-6 lead with 1:46 remaining.

Finally, LSU was able to break through with Lee's touchdown throw to Randle, which quieted the cowbells.

By the time the Tigers finished off the game, the small contingent of LSU fans in the corner of the stadium was chanting “This is our State,” a not-so-subtle jab at Mississippi State's marketing campaign that is constantly shown on Davis Wade Stadium's massive jumbotron.

Pessimism and Little Progress After Day of Negotiations Ends

Negotiators for the N.B.A. and its players union departed Manhattan under a cloud of frustration Tuesday, a labor deal still out of reach, and the season appearing increasingly in doubt.

Despite perceptible movement on the economic issues, union leaders sounded the alarm after a five-hour bargaining session, saying that they were prepared for a long battle and the loss of regular-season games.

“Right now, we can’t find a place with the league and our owners where we can reach a deal sooner rather than later,” the union president Derek Fisher said after the meeting. “It’s discouraging and unfortunate, but that’s the reality of where we stand right now.”

Fisher was flanked by the union’s executive director, Billy Hunter, and eight players from the union’s executive board, all with dour expressions as they sat along one side of a long conference room table.

Hunter said there had been “little or no progress” made, and said he was “a bit pessimistic and discouraged” about the ability to start the season on time. A short time later, speaking in another room, Commissioner David Stern conceded: “We did not have a great day. I think it’s fair to say that.”

No additional meetings are scheduled, although there will probably be some informal dialogue this weekend, after separate meetings of the owners (in Dallas) and the players (in Las Vegas) on Thursday.

Yet the gloomy commentary on Tuesday obscured the fact that the parties are inching toward each other on the financial component of a new labor deal. Each side put Discount Jerseys a new proposal on the board last week, when the top negotiators met in a smaller group, according to a league official. A significant gap remains in dollars, but it is gradually shrinking, the official said.

Stern referred multiple times Tuesday to the prospect of an agreement on the financial parameters.

“We have a sense that, within a certain tolerances, there’s a potential economic deal that may be within view,” Stern said.

At Tuesday’s session — with full labor committees in attendance — the players outlined a proposal in which they would accept a significant salary reduction.

But the offer was predicated on the N.B.A.’s retaining all aspects of the current “soft” salary-cap system, with all of its exceptions and loopholes.

“We said we couldn’t agree to that,” said Adam Silver, the deputy commissioner.

N.B.A. owners are pushing for a hard cap, similar to the N.F.L.’s, or an N.H.L.-style “flex” cap, which allows a broad payroll range but still has a hard ceiling. The union hasfootball cheap fought against a hard cap for decades and remains strongly opposed to it.

Hunter said, “It could be characterized maybe as a blood issue” — a remark that Silver seized on as evidence of the union’s rigidity.

“That doesn’t seem a constructive way to negotiate,” Silver said.

Stern belittled the union as having “an emotional attachment” to the soft cap. Yet he seemed heartened by the financial part of the players’ proposal, saying it contained “economic goals that we could probably mutually meet.”

Hunter said the proposal — which he referred to as more conceptual than specific — “whetted their palates.”

But Hunter disagreed with Stern on everything else, including Stern’s insistence that the league has made a number of new proposals this summer. Hunter said the owners’ position had not changed since June, before the lockout began.

When asked if the league might begin postponing training camps after Thursday’s owners meeting, Stern said no.

But if history is an accurate guide, that day could be arriving in the next 10 days. In 1998, the N.B.A. started postponing camps and canceling preseason games Sept. 24.

If a deal is not reached by mid-October, the league would probably start canceling regular-season games.

The union has been advising its players for two years that a lockout was likely and that a loss of part or all of the season was possible, if the owners were truly determined to impose a hard cap and a salary rollback. Hunter said his constituents were prepared for the worst.

“There’s no question in my mind the players are unified, that if this deal and this is the best deal they can get, they’ve instructed us that they’re prepared to sit out,” he said. “They’re not prepared to accept this deal under any circumstance.”
